Theequalitywatchdogsaysthatwomenagedunder 25 arebearingthebrunt of pregnancyandmaternitydiscrimination at work.Womenagedunder 25 aresixtimesmorelikelythanaveragewomen to be dismissedfromtheirjobsaftertellingemployerstheyarepregnant,newfiguresshow.
ResearchfromtheEqualityandHumanRightsCommission(EHRC) showed that 6% in theyoungeragegroupreportedthatthey were dismissed afterrevealingthattheywereexpecting a childcompared to 1% amongexpectantmothers of allages. It alsofound15% of theyoungermothersfeltunderpressure to hand in theirnotices on becomingpregnant,compared to 7% on average.
Thereportsaidyoungwomenhadlowerawareness of theirrights,weretypically in lessstablejobsandwereworried or lackedconfidenceabouttalking to theirmanageraboutthingsthatweretroublingthem.
TheEHRC is launching a campaign to helpyoungandexpectantnewmothersknowtheirrightsandstand up forthem.CarolineWaters,deputychair of theEHRC, has said : "Youngworkingmothersarefeelingthebrunt of pregnancyandmaternitydiscriminationwithmorethananyotheragegroupbeingforcedout of theirjobs,facingharassmentandexperiencingissueswiththeirhealth as a result.Oftenthesewomen aren't established in theircareers,withjunior or unstableroles,lowpaidandreliant on theirwage to supportthemselvesandtheirbabies.
We cannotcontinue to allowtheseyoungwomen to be unfairlyheldback in thestartingblocks of theirworkingliveswhentheycouldhavethepotential to achievegreatness."
